What We Believe
First Baptist is located in the middle of downtown Marshall, the county seat of Madison County, NC. The church has served as a vital part of this community since its founding in 1830. We are blessed to say that First Baptist has been serving the Lord and ministering to the people in and around Marshall for more than 180 years.
“Enter To Worship, Leave To Serve.” We believe that God has created us in His image. We welcome all who seek to know God more fully and who are striving to live out their lives in His service. Any and all who wish to worship God are welcome here.
As a statement of faith and as a means of identification, this church supports the Baptist Faith and Message as adopted in 1963. Our members also support the Apostles’ Creed as a general statement of our faith.
We believe there are five (5) principal functions of the church. These are Worship, Christian Education, Fellowship, Missions/Ministry, and Evangelism.
Worship is the single most important function of the church. The first four commandments God gave to the children of Israel during their exodus from Egypt address this issue. The church, and her members, is called to unite itself in the worship, praise, adoration and celebration of God as creator, redeemer and sustainer. We are called to celebrate God’s love as expressed and made known in Christ Jesus. We gather together weekly to acknowledge the life, death and resurrection of Christ. In our worship we try to understand how we might immolate and exemplify Christ’s compassion through our lives.
Our Christian Education programs strive to help us understand the deep truths of the Christian Holy Scriptures. We work to learn more about the God we worship and about the life to which God calls us to live. We learn of our failures and of God’s forgiveness. We learn how others are living out the Christ-like life. Our Education program includes a weekly Sunday School Program with Bible Study Classes for all ages. On Sunday Evenings, we have discipleship classes for children and youth. On Wednesday Nights we have an In-depth study of the Bible as well as a time for Prayer. We also have a weekly Prayer Meeting on Tuesday Mornings because prayer is essential to our Christian Life and Education.
Fellowship is a significant part of our church life. We believe that we need to get together regularly to laugh, to eat, to celebrate life, and to supoort each other. Fellowship is one way we build community and a heatlhy church family.
Missions and Ministries are the methods and tools by which we live the image of Christ to the world around us. We support many areas of Missions and Ministry, both within our congregation and within several different religious entities and agencies. This church offers financial contributions to: Baptist State Convention of NC (www.ncbaptist.org) and thereby the Southern Baptist Convention (www.sbc.net), French Broad Baptist Association (www.frenchbroadbaptist.net), Neighbors in Need (a local helping agency in Marshall, NC), and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Other entities, agencies, and ministries are likewise supported as the need arises.
Evangelism is the method by which we tell the world and those around us about the love, grace, hope, peace and strength of Christ. Each member is encouraged to share Christ’s presence with all those they meet.
